I ahev a 1951 Chevy 3100 and the only place I can find a VIN number on it is on the right side of the engine block. Is there one somewhere else that I am not seeing?

VIN numbers were not created until sometime in the 60's. Prior to that, manufacturers would often include a serial number plate. On your truck, the plate is located on the drivers door frame - by the hinges. It says "Manufactured by CHEVROLET DIVISION GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION" and shows the vehicle weight. On the bottom of the tag is a serial number. From that number you can decode the Assembly Plant, Truck Series, Month Manufactured, and what number the truck was in the production run. Heres an example, 3GPD 3289.... The 3 tells us this truck was built in St. Louis MO. GP is a 3100 series truck, D is for April and 3289 means this was the 2289th truck built at that plant, (notice that the actual number is 1000 less than the number stamped on the serial number plate). Tough part is the first number for teh assembly plant - I have a decoder sheet but don't recall where I got it from. Its published somewhere. There were 10 assembly plants for this truck but the numbers are not sequential. They are 1 Flint MI, 2 Tarrytown NY, 3 St Louis MO, 5 Kansas City MO, 6 Oakland CA, 8 Atlanta GA, 9 Norwood OH, 14 Baltimore MD, 20 Los Angeles CA, 21 Janesville WI.
