fuel pump for 230 c.i.

While trying to replace the fuel pump in my 63 chevy with the inline 230 six, I found the new pump lever bottoms out before the pump housing touches the block. (about 1/8th inch gap). My question is, is this right, do I tighten it on down with the two screws or is there something else wrong?
