Hi All, I'm new to this form so please bare with me if I make mistakes. I recently purchased a 1951 chevy truck (3100). I'd been looking for a "fat fendered" truck for quite some time. This truck hasn't ran for many years, but had been sitting inside. Finally got it running decent and now I'm working on the brake system. I plan to up grade the system at some point, but for now, I just want to get the truck to stop so we (my son and I) can take the thing down the road! The master cylinder (single res.) was overhaul-able, but the wheel cylinders are just too far gone. (there goes my cheap brake fix! - kits $3 ea.) The part stores are wanting $31 a piece for, what looks to me, like your basic 1 inch rear / 1 1/8 inch frt GM wheel cylinder. Question: Has anyone found that another GM model wheel cylinder will fit this truck. One that is cheaper than $31 each? Kind of want to get a feel for how the truck is going to run, drive, etc. before spending the cash for a disc brake upgrade. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, and "Drive happily ever after!"

Hi, I'm in the same boat with my 48 GMC! My parts house quoted me... $50.00 for each of the fronts...$75.00 for each of the rears...$139.00 for the master cylinder... $14.00 for each hose. I'm considering going Speedway Automotive, disk brakes for the 48, for the price of $250.00, changing over to a modern master cylinder under the floor, and changing over rearends. This will get me 5 bolt chevy pattern, and a better brake system, and also a better choice of rims... if I want to change from the stock steel look! ps. also a better rear end ratio!
